False Friends?
False friends, in a linguistic sense, are words or phases that appear similar in different languages but carry distinct meanings. Such similarity can result in misunderstandings during communication. This concept is primarily considered within the realm of human interactions, but it also extends to human-machine interactions. Furthermore, there is a more literal interpretation, wherein machines act as false friends by creating an impression of empathy or emotional connection without possessing the genuine depth and authenticity of true companionship. However, we must question the authenticity of our own motives for seeking companionship. Are we employing machines to fulfil our need for genuine connection without expecting any reciprocal effort, thereby making us the false friends as well? Additionally, does the normalisation of selfishness impact our genuine relationships in our lives?
